Typography in Packaging

/ In-Stock Packaging / By Morgan Chaney Team

Typography is inarguably one of the most important design elements in a brand’s packaging. Along with its printed logo, a brand’s choice of typography can become the most recognizable part of its package design.

A partial definition of typography is “…the style, arrangement, or appearance of printed letters on a page …”. As we can garner from this definition, typography helps a product appeal to specific markets and is design based.

The type of typography—whether it’s a serif font or Helvetica— helps a brand create their identity. This explains the phenomenon of brand recognition. Successful brands can be identified by consumers across the globe, solely on their font choice and color.

This however, is why proven companies need to be extremely cautious when rebranding. As a change in font could cause a negative impact, leading to a decline in sales and an overall loss in profit. Generally, when companies choose to change their packaging; they alter printed logos, background images and graphics. Rarely, will a profitable company decided to remove their main typography component.
